the place of dance

Take Your Place (TYP) is an ongoing documentary project which charts snapshots of different professional dance artists contributing to, shaping and advancing the art form through various collaborative, choreographic and artistic methods in America and abroad. The stories collected along this journey share these artists' commitment to evolve their art and expand their communities.

TYP: Regional America

Began in 2014 by three dancers in the early stages of their own professional dance careers, co-creators Rebecca Correia and Chelsea Zeffiro alongside associate producer, Tess Lane, road-tripped across America to explore the regional dance climate while documenting the atmospheres of different dance companies dedicated to promoting diversity and making social impact with their repertoire. TYP: Regional America is currently in post-production.

In 2015, a second installment of TYP evolved as Correia and Zeffiro began  documenting innovative contemporary companies bringing and making new and relevant work in an ever-changing city: Los Angeles. The TYP: LA installment focuses on the creation of work within a company rather than the exploration of different company atmospheres. The themes of geographic and artistic exploration prevail as the constant throughline questions: “Where is dance going?” or “Where are we going in dance?”

Both Correia’s and Zeffiro’s artistic and professional pursuits aligned again early in 2016. After having some success at an international dance festival, the co-creators received an invitation to travel to Vienna, Austria and will begin production on a third installment. For TYP: Europe: the dancers continue their somewhat biographical project, delving further into their questions about dance as an art form and exploring entirely new places and some of the different ways in which movement is being shaped and dance is being explored.

TYP: Europe begins in Vienna and tours the continent, making stops in different cities and countries in search of dance innovators and dance thinkers. TYP Europe will engage an audience with movement-based interviews and asks questions about how movement is generated and explores the nuances of dance as an art form.

Additionally Correia and Zeffiro currently serve as Diplomats for The Global Dance Initiative, helping raise awareness for the Initiative, but also searching for new Heroes – those who are using dance to Heal, Connect and/or Inspire – throughout their journey.
